Across the Globe: Gallery Spotlight #7

by Unseen July 31 2017

With Unseen Amsterdam 2017 fast approaching, we are pleased to introduce the galleries that will be exhibiting work throughout the weekend. In this feature, we take a region by region view so that you can learn more about what and who will be shown. This week, we travel to Italy to shine a light on METRONOM, ILEX Gallery and Matèria.

ILEX Gallery
ILEX Gallery was founded in 2008 in Rome by Deanna Richardson and specialises in contemporary creative photography in all its forms and perspectives, fusing the distinction between photojournalism and artistic photography. The gallery presents a curatorial program of exhibitions and participates in international photography fairs – offering work united by an individual, personalised vision of the world from both emerging and renowned international artists. One of the artists ILEX will be showcasing at Unseen Amsterdam 2017 will be Tanya Habjouqa, from Jordan, who will be showing premiering work from her ongoing series ‘Sacred Space Oddity: The Un/Holy Land’. Exploring the overlaps between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Habjouqa investigates the permeable borders between the sacred and the profane with a sensitive and at times humorous eye.

METRONOM was founded in 2008 in Modena by Marcella Manni. Mainly devoted to photography and video, it hosts exhibitions of both Italian and international artists, with a focus on young talent. All exhibitions at the gallery are presented with the aim of showing new work, previously unseen in Italy. METRONOM also hosts workshops, book launches, lectures and discussions in collaboration with local institutions and international partners. Amongst other artists, METRONOM will be showing a premiering series of work by TILO&TONI, the German artist duo who were founded in 2015 by Tim Cullmann and Lorenz Reinard. Graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam this year, TILO&TONI have a background in sculpture, painting and photography and use their practice to remix, sample and appropriate the world of images.

Based in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood of Rome, Matèria specialises in contemporary photographic practice and visual culture. The gallery furthers and supports the work of emerging and established artists through a curatorial programme of exhibitions and events that engage with photography's evolving contemporary dialects. Amongst other artists, Matèria is pleased to present premiering work by Alix Marie, a French artist working across the mediums of photography and sculpture. Considering the photograph as an object, Alix Marie investigates photography’s potential for materiality and three-dimensionality through visceral explorations of the body. Merging ideas of the skin and the image together, an interest in the abject runs through Alix Marie’s work as it delves into the unchartered space between boundaries.
